About the event
Indigenous folks have the highest interaction rate with the "system" than any other group in our region. Whether it be through criminal justice, as a survivor of domestic or sexual violence, a foster child, a trafficking survivor, or the medical system, Indigenous people find themselves interacting with a structure filled with historical trauma and biases.
In the face of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relative (MMIR) Crisis, what can community members do to help? Where do the vulnerabilities exist and how can an average person help close those gaps? Mak Mars will present on the current issues facing Indian Country and the ways in which professionals, neighbors, and communities can ally with their Indigenous relatives and build safer, more responsive systems for all. Sponsored by AAUW and EMPOWER.
In-person attendees are encouraged to order lunch, but it is not required. Remote audiences may stream the program live via Zoom. The recorded Zoom will be made available on the Boundary Waters Connect YouTube channel within a week of the program, pending the consent of all participants.
